Help For Families in Need | Alabama Christmas Assistance

23 October 2011 8 Comments

I often receive requests for locations where they can inquire about donation information so their families can receive Christmas assistance in the way of gifts for their children, Christmas trees, and clothing because they are unemployed, disabled, or this year are survivors of the devastating tornadoes and other disasters that hit this country. The following links are for Alabama charities and organizations that may be able to help families in need of Christmas donations and other types of assistance.

Some say that just before a baby is born, an angel shows it everything there is to know and learn on Earth. Then at that moment of birth, the angel touches the infant’s upper lip, and the child forgets everything. I don’t know if that happens or not, and there is no way to know if it does, but what I do know is that all of us on Earth spend the rest of our lives trying to figure out what the meaning of life is all about. I have watched my sister through all the years of my life go through the worse struggles than I would imagine anyone possibly deserves, and even through it all she never stops to think about what “she” needs. She always thinks about others before herself, and I always wonder even to this day how she manages to do what she does every day. She is the least selfish person I know even through her own unspoken needs.

My sister Lindsey is a single mother of two boys, Landon who is 5 and Baylon who is 3 months old. Before Baylon was born and while she was pregnant my sister
unfortunately couldn’t afford to live at the house she was renting and she at the time had nowhere to go. I myself was living with a friend because of my unfortunate chain of events and also being in nursing school, and because of that I was not able to allow her and my nephew to stay at my temporary residence. My sister had to literally live at a hotel in the worse neighborhood ever just so they could have a place to sleep. That lasted about six months, and thankfully she was able to find a house to rent that she could afford, and not in the best neighborhood either, but it didn’t matter. She managed to do that all on her own. Never did she ask anyone for anything. During that period of her life while she was pregnant with her 2nd child she found out that the baby had and still has Omphalicele. This condition means that he will be born with all of his organs on the outside of his body. Also on top of that they said he was also showing signs of having a heart condition. When Baylon was born it was exactly as they expected, but it was a constant struggle to make sure that he wouldn’t get an infection, because of everything being exposed that naturally shouldn’t be. Baylon was in the NICU for a month and a half, and thankfully she was able to take him home. His organs are still in a sac on the outside of his body right now, but she has to keep it wrapped every day. They cannot perform the surgery that he needs to fix it until he is around 4 years old. Also because of the heart condition he is scheduled for open heart surgery when he is 6 months old. My sister is also not able to work because she has to take care of the baby everyday as well as her other son. My sister also just informed me that she hasn’t been able to pay her utilities up to date, and on top of her not having the money for her rent this month, her electricity bill is also $458. She had to use her stove for heat, and didn’t realize that using the oven would make her power bill so high. The disconnection notice is for Dec 12th, and she doesn’t know how she is going to pay it, and because of all of this she has no money to buy the Christmas that her family deserves. She doesn’t even have a Christmas tree. I hate more than anything to watch her and my nephews go through this and that is why I am writing you. I know that she would appreciate ANY help at all in this time of need.

Strength, perseverance, and a lot of praying are the only things that have helped my sister get through the past couple of years. I admire her for what she does and who she is. I hope that you will consider helping my sister through these hard times, and I thank you for anything that you can do. Thank you so much for even taking the time to read this as I know that you must be getting hundreds of emails like this. Again, thank you.

    Christina Burns
    Thanks and God Bless!
